My name is Christian Bell. I’m a community-based theatre practitioner, educator, and scholar.

I hold a PhD in Theatre Historiography from the University of Minnesota, and an MA in International Performance Research from the University of Warwick/University of Amsterdam. My masters training in practice-as-research and my doctoral training in historiography inform my unique approach to creative, pedagogical, and scholarly endeavors.

Scholarship

My research focuses on contemporary and historical Indigenous performance collaborations, legacies of settlement that continue to shape academic and cultural institutions, and the pedagogical potential of gardens.

Teaching

My approach to teaching emphasizes the relationship between people, performance, and place. I nurture a learning space that encourages students to think critically and creatively about the most pressing issues of our time.

Community-Based Projects

My work as a community-based theatre and performance artist explores the interplay between ecology and performance.

Today, I teach in university and community spaces in both the Twins Cities area and greater Minnesota. I’m also working on a book manuscript on the ethics of artistic alliances with Indigenous-led cultural and linguistic recovery efforts.
